The Places That Become Part of a Community

Somewhere between coffee, handmade treasures, and unexpected conversations, local businesses become part of a community's story. This week, I'm celebrating one of Elk Grove's favorite gathering places as Rescate Coffee turns ten

Ten years is a long time. Long enough for someone to stop in for a cup of coffee and turn it into a weekly tradition. Long enough for friendships to form, families to grow, and entire chapters of life to come and go.

This Saturday, we'll be celebrating the 10-year anniversary of Rescate Coffee in Elk Grove, and it got me thinking about the places that quietly become part of a community's story.

When people talk about supporting small businesses, it's easy to focus on the products. The coffee, the handmade goods, the food. But I think what people are really supporting is something much bigger.

They're supporting places.

Places where people gather, conversations happen and memories get made.

A coffee shop becomes part of someone's morning routine. A bookstore becomes the place where someone discovers their favorite author. A local market becomes the place where neighbors run into each other, friends catch up, and small businesses get a chance to connect with the people they serve.

One of my favorite things about being a market vendor isn't actually the selling, it's the people. The grandmother looking for the perfect gift. The parent helping their child choose a plushie. The customer who comes back months later and tells me exactly where the dragon they adopted now lives. Those moments stay with me.

And one of the reasons this particular celebration feels special is because Rescate has already become part of the Hex & Hook story.

I first met Brenda from Rescate at another market. We chatted for a bit, and later she invited us to do a holiday pop-up at the coffee shop during Christmas. I remember showing up that day not entirely sure what to expect. What I found was a warm, welcoming family-owned business filled with genuinely kind people. The staff was wonderful. The owners were incredibly supportive. The customers were lovely. And by the end of the event, they had adopted every single gingerbread plushie we brought with us! It's still one of my favorite market memories.

That's what makes celebrating ten years feel meaningful. It's not just ten years of coffee. It's ten years of relationships. Ten years of people gathering around tables, sharing conversations, supporting one another, and building something that becomes part of the community itself. I think that's worth celebrating.

So this Saturday, we'll be joining Rescate Coffee's 10-year anniversary celebration from 9am to 2pm in Elk Grove.

There will be coffee, food, music, local vendors, and plenty of opportunities to support the small businesses that help make our community feel like home.

We'll be bringing a collection of magical companions with us, and we'd love to see you there.

And if you've been part of Rescate's story over the last ten years, this seems like the perfect weekend to stop by, grab a cup of coffee, and celebrate everything they've built.
