A New Pattern Test with a Fuzzy Twist

If you’ve followed Hex & Hook for a while, you know I love pattern testing—and this time, I fell head over heels for the Large Rat pattern by Bria of MeadowSage Crochet It was the perfect blend of quirky and cozy, and I knew right away I wanted to bring this little guy to life using something extra soft.

So who better to honor than James, named after a beloved (and rather large) pet rat I had many years ago. He had a huge heart and an even bigger personality—and this squishy tribute definitely does him justice.

Pattern Notes: No Sew and So Much Fun

This pattern is incredibly beginner-friendly, clear, and thoughtfully written. Even if you’ve never made a plush rat before, the instructions are easy to follow and offer multiple design options, including:

  • A solid color rat (like James)

  • A hooded rat

  • A Ratatouille-inspired chef rat (yes, really!)

And perhaps best of all—this is a no-sew pattern! Everything is worked in one piece, so you don’t have to worry about attaching tiny limbs or fiddly ears. It’s one of the most satisfying makes I’ve completed in a while, and I can’t recommend it enough.

My First Time Using Keche’s Fluffy Yarn

While I’ve gushed endlessly about Keche velvet, this was my first time working with Keche Fluffy—and let me tell you, I’d been saving it for just the right moment.

I’ve actually had this yarn tucked away in my stash for months. I adored how soft and cozy it felt, but I’ll be honest—I was nervous. I’ve never used fluffy yarn for a full pattern test before. Most of the fluffy yarns I’ve tried in the past have been tricky to work with, and I’ve shied away from using them for anything detailed. But when the Large Rat pattern came along, I knew the time had come.

And I’m so glad I finally gave it a try.

This yarn is unbelievably soft, has the perfect scruffy-but-cuddly texture, and was shockingly easy to work with—especially for a textured yarn. I even have a little visibility trick that helped me crochet without losing my stitches (which I’ll share in a future blog post!).

✨ Bonus: Keche Fluffy comes in 20 magical colors—from dreamy pastels to bold, witchy tones—and all Keche yarns are currently 20% off through the end of August.

If you’ve been curious about trying fluffy yarn but feeling hesitant—this is the one. And now is the perfect time to give it a go.

Little Touches That Make a Big Difference

To really bring James to life, we painted soft white mica highlights on his safety eyes, giving him that signature sparkle that’s become a staple of Hex & Hook plushies. Those tiny details are what make our creations feel truly magical—and James is no exception.

He’s squishy, cozy, and full of charm. Whether you're a rat-lover or just looking for a cute handmade friend, James is a plushie you’ll want to scoop up (if I don’t keep him for myself!).

Final Thoughts

🧶 Would I use this pattern again? Absolutely. It’s clear, no-sew, and fun to customize.
🌟 Would I use Keche Fluffy Yarn again? Without a doubt. The softness and quality make it perfect for everything from rats to dragons.
